Dairy-free no longer means giving up yogurt. There are now dozens of options on the market! But I must confess that some might not meet your expectations. So we taste-tested our way through every offering and product line we could find and identified the 10 best dairy-free yogurt brands on the market. They all happen to be plant-based, vegan, and carrageenan-free. And you will find many nut-free, soy-free, coconut-free, and even paleo options.
Enjoy our countdown below of coconut, almond, cashew, soy, and top allergen-free yogurts. Then comment with your favorite!
We found well over 20 dairy-free yogurt brands (by individual product line) to taste test. But these are the ones that will make it into our shopping cart again.
For Low Sugar Needs: Please note that the nutrition facts and ingredients are one sample flavor. If they had a “Plain” we used that one. We purposely used a sweetened variety, if they have one, so that you could see what type of sweetener the brand uses, if any. Several of these do have no sugar added / unsweetened varieties, so be sure to read the details if you are looking for lower sugars!
Formerly known as O’Soy, this yogurt line once had some confusing dairy labeling issues and later a recall. To shed their spotted past, Stonyfield is rebranding with a bolder “dairy-free” label (shown below) and without the O’Soy name. This yogurt brand isn’t quite as great as long lost WholeSoy, but it still covers organic soy yogurt needs with good flavors and a smooth consistency. And it’s a fun option for “fruit on the bottom” fans.
Ingredients (Vanilla Flavor): cultured pasteurized organic soy milk, organic cane sugar, organic natural vanilla flavor, calcium carbonate, natural flavor, pectin, s. thermophilus, l. bulgaricus, l. acidophilus, and bifidus
Note: We just found out this line is discontinuing, but we expect new things from the Dream brand soon.
This dessert-worthy yogurt has a consistency that’s quite similar to “traditional” low-fat dairy-based yogurt, but with less tang, and more flavorful sweetness. I wanted to add Almond Dream to this top 10 list of dairy-free yogurt brands, too (it’s also sweet and flavorful). But the consistency of that product line is too inconsistent – sometimes creamy, sometimes gelatinous. Thus far, we haven’t seen any issues with Dream’s coconut line.
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): coconut base (water, coconut cream), evaporated cane syrup, stabilizer blend (corn starch, tapioca maltodextrin, pectin, locust bean gum), tapioca fiber, tricalcium phosphate, cultures (l. acidophilus, bifidobacterium lactis, s. thermophilus, l. delbrueckii), antimicrobial (from culture)
This is the best top allergen-free, coconut-free yogurt that we’ve tried. It’s tough to make yogurt without dairy, let alone nuts, soy, and coconut. But Good Karma pulled off a very “yogurt-y” consistency. It’s quite creamy instead of gelatinous. The flavor is a bit sweet, but this can be necessary to counteract protein bitterness. And the nice big fruit chunks made it feel a little more wholesome.
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): cultured pasteurized flaxmilk (filtered water, cold pressed flax oil), pea protein isolate, cane sugar, corn starch (unmodified, identity preserved), tapioca starch, agar, locust bean gum, citric acid, cultured dextrose, tricalcium phosphate, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12. contains 7 live and active cultures: streptococcus thermophilus, lactobacillus bulgaricus, bifidobacterium lactis, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus lactis
This very virtuous brand disappeared several years ago, but it was purchased by GT’s and brought back to life! It’s the “cleanest” on the market and has a unique, but tasty, effervescence. And it boasts a whopping 25 billion probiotics per 1/2 cup serving with no added sugar.
Ingredients (Pure Flavor): raw young coconut, raw young coconut water, probiotic cultures (the flavored varieties are sweetened with a touch of stevia)
In recent years, So Delicious abandoned their other dairy-free yogurt brands to focus exclusively on their classic coconutmilk line. Now they have a plethora of flavors in single-serve cups and multi-serve tubs that can be found in grocers everywhere. I’m most loyal to their Unsweetened variety, which offers so much versatility in recipes and seems to work the best with their carrageenan-free formula (they removed the carrageenan a few years ago). Some of the fruit flavors can be a little lumpy depending on the batch.
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): organic coconutmilk (filtered water, organic coconut cream), organic cane sugar, rice starch, less than 2% of: calcium citrate, pectin, live and active cultures, vitamin d2, vitamin b12
I believe this is the highest protein option on the market, and without any added protein. Consequently, it has a very smooth consistency that beckons to dairy yogurt. In fact, Tony exclaimed “Yoplait!” when he sampled one of the flavors. It’s satisfyingly sweet with a slight tang. The cups come only in flavors, but you can buy the lower sugar Plain variety in larger tubs.
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): soymilk (filtered water, soybeans), cane sugar, contains 2% or less of: live and active cultures, corn starch, natural flavor, pectin, tricalcium phosphate, citric acid, dipotassium phosphate, sea salt, mixed tocopherols (to protect flavor), vitamin c ester, vitamin d2
Holy uncow! It’s straight up cultured coconut cream. This stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s so unbelievably thick and rich that I usually break one serving into three. It’s the perfect healthy dollop atop granola, fresh fruit, or even dessert! Coyo used to use stevia to sweeten, but it was cut from the formula. Now this flavor-on-the-bottom brand doesn’t use any added sweeteners.
Ingredients (Natural Flavor): coconut cream (coconut extract, water), tapioca, pectin and probiotic cultures; b. bifidum, b. lactis, l. acidophilus, l. casei, l. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, l. rhamnosus, streptococcus thermophilus.
Forager’s original Cashewgurt line isn’t bad, but it lacks well-rounded flavors and a full-bodied consistency. This newer Coconut Cashewgurt line picks up where it left off. Both of their dairy-free yogurt brands are made with cashews and coconut, but the latter has a higher ratio of coconut cream for a richer finish that melds nicely with fruity flavors.
Ingredients (Lime Flavor): coconut & cashewmilk (filtered water, coconut cream*, cashews*), cane sugar*, tapioca starch*, lemon*, pectin, natural flavor, locust bean gum*, fruit and vegetable juice (for color), agar, lemon juice concentrate*, live active cultures (s. thermophilus, l. bulgaricus, l. acidophilus, bifidus, l. lactis, l. plantarum) *organic
I had the chance to try this scrumptious fruit-on-the-bottom, no added sweetener yogurt at a tradeshow, and was reminded of it by a reader named Katie:
I found a DELICIOUS dairy free yogurt at Wegmans. It is from a company called The Coconut Collaborative. They have 3 or 4 flavors and by far has the most dairy-like tasting notes and texture without actually having dairy.
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): coconut milk (coconut extract, coconut water, water), tapioca starch, potato starch, pectin, non-dairy cultures (s.thermophilus + l.bulgaricus, lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium lactis)
Silk struck the perfect balance between simple wholesome ingredients, creamy consistency, and delicious flavor with their almondmilk yogurt line. Unlike many dairy-free almond-based products, they use a good does of real almonds to provide richness and nutrition. In fact, it’s such good quality, that you can make amazing dairy-free yogurt cheese with it!
Ingredients (Plain Flavor): almondmilk (filtered water, almonds), cane sugar, contains 2% or less of: calcium citrate, pectin, live and active cultures, vitamin d2
*Know Your Needs! By ingredients, all of the products listed above are dairy-free. Nonetheless, check with the company on their manufacturing processes for all varieties if potential allergen cross-contamination is an issue for you. All products are at some degree of risk for cross-contamination with allergens, but you must determine if the protocols are safe for your needs. Also processes and labeling are subject to change at any time for any company / product.
Yogurt is a very personal thing. Many of you will like these other brands, and we think each one has merits. They just didn’t make the top 10 this time around with our taste-testers.
We weren’t able to access some regional brands and some brands that are only available outside of the U.S.
Don’t be shy! Do you love one that didn’t rank in our top 10? Did we hit the mark for you? Did we miss a good dairy-free yogurt that you can buy? Everyone wants to hear YOUR opinion too!
**UPDATE!!** = NEW YOGURT FROM SODELICIOUS! Read on for the full review 😀
Hi guys! I’m sooooooo sorry I have neglected my blog in the past couple weeks. With the end of summer approaching I was blasted with a wave of business combined with laziness… I’m starting graduate school in just a short week and a half! Eeek! I promise to be a better blogger going forward 🙂
Apologies aside, I present to you in this blog…my first vegan product review!!! For those of you who are newly vegan, considering going vegan, curious about those suspicious looking vegan yogurts on the shelf of your grocer, or a longtime vegan who maybe hasn’t tried them or is looking for a good recommendation for a friend/loved one but who has forgotten what dairy tastes like (and therefore worried about making a non-ominvore friendly recommendation). I have the answers for you!
I have a hot, tempestuous, lustful, desirous affair with yogurt…frozen yogurt…yogurt shakes & drinks…pretty much anything with yogurt I’m sure to love. So committing to veganism, I did imagine that someday I might miss my true beloved…yogut. Thankfully, I was so wrong. Over the past few weeks I have been buying and taste testing all the non-dairy vegan yogurt brands available to me and I now present to you: The Results!! (Results you can hopefully 🙂 trust. As a still new vegan, I know my yogurt dammit and I want something that tastes just as good without all the animal exploitation!!)
**NEW** So Delicious Coconut Yogurt Greek Style!
Pros:
It truly is SO DELICIOUS!!
Consistency is identical to dairy yogurt
Coconut is good for your heart!!
Soy free
Lower fat than other coconut based yogurts/items…only 4 grams of fat per yogurt cup!
6 Live Active Cultures!
Cons:
Honestly I don’t have any criticisms, it’s definitely a new favorite
Oh wait, I thought of one… sort of… it’s a little pricey compared to its soy counterparts offerred by other brands. So/Del Greek Coco Yo = $1.99 per/yogurt. Honestly though, it’s worth it, I mean, you’re reaping health benefits and spoonfuls of coconut yogurt bliss.
Reccomendations:
I approve this yogurt for everyone! Coconut yogurt for all humankind!
Comments:
I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of So Delicious Greek Style yogurt to my grocery shelf since being tipped off by a lovely So Delicious Representative (who was kind enough to read my review of their other yogurt products). So, yesterday, when I saw it sitting pretty on the shelf of Whole Foods in Oakland, I nearly fainted. I couldn’t wait to try it, and it did not dissapoint. I have tried the bluberry and the raspberry. I have the strawberry in my fridge and it has breakfast written all over it for tomorrow morning.
The yogurt is, in my humble oppinion, perfection. The consistency is identical to dairy yogurt, the fruit flavors are right on point, and most exciting (for me anyways) is these yogurts have that amazing natural tartness that one finds in the dairy yogurts. This is an element I have missed in my non-cruelty yogurts. So Delicious Coconut Greek Style yogurt has sung a siren song to my palette.
Ok, enough with the gratuitous love letter/recommendation of So/Del Coco Yo. Something which critics of the regular So Del Coco (non-greek) Yo might find interesting is that the Greek Style is much less sweet than the regular. Some people didn’t like the natural sweetness the coconut brought to their regular Coconut-based yogurt. The greek style is very natural tasting and as stated previously, has that natural tartness inherent to dairy yogurts.
So in conclusion, So Delicious now has TWO yummy coconut-based yogurts you can try/buy/eat/bathe in/write love ballad to/contemplate/review/whatever you like to do with yogurt…
If you like sweet –> get the regular So/Del Coco Yo
If you like tart –> get the greek style
Whatever your fancy, go get some yogurt 🙂
 1. Ricera Yogurt!
Pros:
Low Fat, only 1 gram of fat per container
Soy Free, for those of us who may be wishing to reduce our soy intake, this is an easy substitution
Made with fiber rich cultured brown rice, one little container = 1 Full serving of whole grains
Cons:
The texture is not akin to “regular” yogurt, but rather syrup-like
Reccomendations:
Recommended strongly to seasoned, long-time, or adventurous vegans.
Not Recommended to new vegans, or vegans looking for a true yogurt substitute
Comments:
After reading a rave review about Ricera yogurt on another blog, I was very excited to try it. So excited in fact, that I ordered a whole case because my local Whole Foods didn’t carry it.
(I got 10% off for ordering by the case! So if you find a yogurt you absolutely love, save yourself some money and order by the case!)
I tried the vanilla flavor. Opening the little carton I was a bit surprised by the texture which is not dairy/yogurt-like at all, but more syrup-like. This really isn’t a bad thing unless you want an exact yogurt subsitute. I’m certainly not criticizing the Ricera, because in fact, I DID like it! I ate the whole case :).
However, if you are looking for a vegan yogurt which will be identical to your dairy yogurt, this is not the one. The flavor was very tasty, the vanilla was definitely there, but to me it was more like a spiced vanilla or a chai vanilla. Overall, I enjoyed this yogurt &Â it’s something I will buy again. I appreciate very much that it is a whole grain yogurt. I really like to get as much variety in my diet as I can and this is an easy, tasty way to do it!
2. Whole Soy & Co Yogurt
Pros:
The most wallet friendly of all the vegan yogurts, I believe this was only about 99c per cup! Stock up!
Great for those soy milk lovers out there as it does have a slight but distinct tinge of soy milk flavor
Yummy traditional fruit flavors like blueberry, peach, raspberry etc…Besides the soy milk flavor, the fruit flavors are true to taste!
Cons:
If you don’t like or are not used to soy milk, you may not like this. As mentioned above, it does taste true to soy milk
The texture is much closer to your dairy yogurt, however the texture is still a bit thin
This isn’t a con per say, but it’s a soy product. A lot fo vegans I know are trying to be more conscious of their soy intake. It’s just an observation.
Recommendation:
Recommended for eating yummy vegan yogurt on the cheap!
Recommended if you are accustomed to soy milk
Not Recommended for someone who is looking for an exact yogurt substitution
Comments:
This is the first soy yogurt I ever tried, I actually tried this even before I went vegan. I suppose I was testing the waters, seeing if I could live with a dairy yogurt substitute. The answer to that question: absolutely. I’ve been drinking soy milk for years so I really like Whole Soy Yogurt Co. It’s widely available at most traditional grocery stores, it’s cheap, it’s quick and it’s yummy!
3. Silk Live! Soy Yogurt
Pros:
Texture is almost perfect. Indistinguishable from dairy yogurt!
Really fun flavors like Key Lime Pie (which is the one I tried)
Has live active cultures for your digestion
Cheap! Between 99c and $1.49 depending on your grocer
Cons:
None, this is a great yogurt
Recommendation:
Recommended for any vegan, new, old, even those looking for a true yogurt substitute.
Not recommended for those looking to reduce their soy intake
Comments:
I tried the Key Lime Pie flavor and it was super tasty! The texture is identical to regular yogurt and the flavor is really yummy! I would love some reader feedback if you have tried this yogurt and tell me if you taste any soy flavor, I really couldn’t but I want to be as accurate as possible!
 4. So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt
Pros:
Texture is spot on, I will reveal my favorite yogurt shortly, however until I tried my fave yogurt, this was my favorite. Identical in texture to dairy yogurt.
Fun flavors like Passionate Mango & Pina Colada
Coconut based! Get your fruit, and then get more fruit from the coconut!
Very Sweet
Cons:
I believe this is the most expensive of all the vegan yogurts I tried
Very Sweet (this goes in pros and cons, it just depends on your taste preferences!)
Recommendation:
I would recommend this to any vegan or omnivore.
Recommended if you want to reduce your soy intake.
Comments:
I was very curious about the So Delicious Coconut Yogurt after I read a pretty scathing review on another blog. I bought two flavors, vanilla and pina colada. The other blogger stated that the vanilla was inedible to her but the other flavors were better. I really wanted to see about this vanilla myself…
I don’t really know what to say other than, we just must have different taste buds because I loved the SO Delicious Coconut Yogurt. I loved both flavors, I thought the texture was spot on, and the flavors were really good! This yogurt is sweeter than the others I tried, which is fine with me but I can see how others might be put off by this.
It seems to be a controversial yogurt…but doesn’t that make you want to taste this dangerous delicacy? Try and tell me what you think! Comment!!
 5. Amande Almond Yogurt
Pros:
The texture is AMAZING. Full, fluffy, custard like, unbelievable.
Flavor is impeccable (I had the peach & it even had little peach bits mixed in)
It’s made from almond milk!!! Almonds! Get your nut protein!!
Cons:
None…?
Recommendation:
Recommended for everyone. Everyone. Go buy some right now.
Not recommended for those looking to reduce fat (see comments on the Coconut Yogurt)
Comments:
I’m sorry, I can’t be impartial with this yogurt because I FUCKING LOVE IT!!!!! This is the sweetest thing to ever touch vegan lips. I really enjoyed all the yogurts I tried and I’ll be buying all of them again, but in my opinion, the Amande blew everyone right out of the water. The texture is divine, the fluffiest, fullest yogurt I ate. The flavor was amazing. I am unable to come up with a single criticism. I would love to hear what any of you have to say about this yogurt. Please bring the criticism because I really do want to provide an accurate review of each yogurt. However, for my taste palate, this yogurt was perfection.

A great Dairy Free Yogurt is Soy Yogurt. Soy Yogurt is a great alternative to the traditional yogurts made with animal by-products. As we liked to say here, Keep the milk inside the COW!!! Soy Yogurt is just as satisfying as dairy ones in every aspect. After trying Soy Yogurt you will be pleased on how a yogurt doesn't actually need any dairy in it to have the same benefits and taste as in yogurts made with dairy, cows milk.
To the left you will find most of the current Soy Yogurt brands and each link will provide you with an good overview of what they offer. Nutritional data and ingredients will be listed so you can evaluate which will fit your taste buds.
Brief History of the Soybean:
The Soybean was officially domesticated in 1100 B.C. by Chinese farmers. By the first century A.D. the Soybean began to spread across the world. It wasn't until 1904 that the Soybean was found to have a good amount of protein and oil to benefit the diets of Americans. In the 1940's Soybean farming began to really take off and the U.S. now produces 32% of the Soybeans in the world, next to Brazil. Soybeans are not only used for humans to eat, but livestock eat up the bean by a whopping 25 million tons each year!
If the goal was to top one of the biggest dairy yogurt makers, they may have succeeded. Silk Dairy Free Yogurt takes cultured milk beverage to a new sweet and dreamy level.
But first, lets address the elephant in the room. Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative is soy-based. Why do I still like it? It is made with whole, non-GMO soy and not with genetically-modified soy and not soy protein, soy isolates, or soy concentrates. The latter are the types of soy that tend to get a thumbs down from scientific studies when eaten in excess. Fermented soy and whole soy foods actually don’t have a bad rap in the research. Just enjoy in moderation is the mantra I take with all foods! Plus, let’s face it, soy has been largely unbeatable as a base for yogurt substitutes.
Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative has a creamy, perfectly thick consistency and a flavor that certainly doesn’t smack of soy. The Vanilla had marvelous little flecks of vanilla bean! It had a rich, sweet taste with the perfect hint of yogurt-y tang. The Peach & Mango was like summer in a cup. The bright fruits and seamless taste beckoned to beloved dairy yogurts on the market, and made Tony say, “it tastes like Yoplait!”. Black Cherry isn’t the first variety I would usually reach for, but the dessert-like quality made it irresistible.
Which brings me to the one caveat for Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative. Like most dairy-based yogurts, the flavored varieties have 16 to 17 grams of sugars per serving. This is a bit steep for my breakfast. But considering the other virtues, I think it makes a wonderful afternoon or evening treat.
Since it is made with whole soybeans, each serving of Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative has 6 grams of natural, plant-based protein and 20% of the RDA for calcium without fortification. It is also fortified with vitamin D2 for a bigger bone health boost. And of course, it is carrageenan-free and each bite is stocked with dairy-free live and active cultures (a.k.a. probiotics). Plus, for those of us who want a lower sugar option, Silk has delivered.
Silk now offers larger 24-ounce tubs of select varieties, including Simply Plain. This no frills flavor is lower in sugars (7 grams per cup) and has a much less sweet, more versatile flavor profile. I still have to get my hands on a tub to give it a full test, because I have only sampled a little trade show taste, thus far!
Price: $1.29 per 5.3-ounce single
Certifications: Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative is Non-GMO Verified. It is also labeled as gluten-free, but we did not note a certification for this.
Dietary Notes: By ingredients, Silk Dairy Free Yogurt Alternative is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free, peanut-free, vegan / plant-based, and vegetarian. Nonetheless, always read the ingredient statement and check with the company on their manufacturing processes for all varieties if potential allergen cross-contamination is an issue for you. Processes and labeling are subject to change at any time for any company / product.

I was very disappointed with silk coconut yogurt. It’s soooo thin and just tastes bad. It’s hardly “yogurt”. And it’s so overpriced. Seven dollars for the regular size.
I was taken at back when I opened the conyainer of vanilla. The image on the package gives the image of white yogurt. I wasn’t sure it was still good. The flavour is good.
Response from Go Dairy Free
Julie, I’m not sure what the package image you have looks like, but the pictures I’ve posted here are actual for what it looks like. It isn’t white, but more of a yellow-ish beige.
If you’re looking for a dairy-free option that rivals popular dairy yogurts in taste and consistency, then this could be your holy grail. Not only does it offer satisfyingly sweet, slightly tangy flavors and the perfect creamy consistency (without carrageenan!), it’s also naturally equivalent in protein and calcium. But like those dairy-based yogurts, these are a bit high in sugars (aside from the Simply Plain with just 7 grams per cup). To note, these have a base of non-GMO, whole soy (not isolates).
